Folksonomy is the result of personal free tagging of information and objects (anything with a URL) for one’s own retrival. The tagging is done in a social environment. Folksonomy is created from the act of tagging by the person consuming the information.
I talk with Thomas Vander Wal about Folksonomies and the ways in which this apparently simple concept is being extended to meet today’s complex requirements. We consider the relationship between emergent folksonomies and established formal taxonomies.
